Leadership
Video & Technology
Before my internship with the video/technology department at Rutgers Football, I had very little filming experience. At practices I struggled to understand some of the basic camera functions such as adjusting brightness. I was always asking my supervisors and coworkers questions and relied on them greatly to help me navigate everything. It took me a while to truly feel confident in my filming abilities. As the season progressed and I got more comfortable at practices, I noticed that others started to see this as well. My supervisors gave me opportunities to learn how to film at different angles and I started to do more on the field. Not too long after I started there were new video/technology interns hired. They were coming to me a lot asking questions and looking for advice. Being able to help out my new coworkers just like my older ones did for me, was a full circle moment that allowed me to step up and become a leader in the department.
Networking
When I first started my freshman year at Rutgers University in 2019, I was a very reserved and quiet person. It took me a while to come out of my shell and develop connections with my peers. Throughout my time at Rutgers, I have been fortunate to create relationships with my professors, classmates, and coworkers, all of which have pushed me out of my shyness. This gave me the confidence to go out of my comfort zone and nominate myself to be the recruitment advisor for my co-ed professional fraternity, Phi Sigma Pi. My role as a recruitment advisor requires me to network with almost all students at the university. I host events and information sessions for potential new members of the fraternity to attend. I am also a member of the Executive Board for my chapter of Phi Sigma Pi, which is responsible for overseeing and making decisions for the fraternity. This position has allowed me to grow as a leader and connect with more people than I thought possible.
Game Day Operations
Having the opportunity to travel with the Rutgers Football team for away games has allowed my leadership skills to improve significantly. Because I have a background in performing operational tasks as a recruiting intern, I was relied upon to be a leader for the rest of the interns who traveled from the other departments. One prime example of this is when I was assigned the group leader of the interns when traveling home from Minnesota and Michigan State. I was in charge of making sure everyone made it on the flight home, and I communicated directly with our bus driver to make sure once we landed, we had transportation back to Rutgers. Being able to lead this group multiple times has sharpened my leadership skills and has given me more confidence. Knowing that I am a leader who can be relied on and trusted is something I take very seriously. I hope to continue to grow my leadership skills with Rutgers Football in the future.
